iGaming GEO and AI search optimization

When someone asks ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode which casinos are licensed in Michigan, the answer is built from a handful of sources. GEO is the work of making your brand one of them, with the right facts attached.

Ask about GEO ↗

iGaming GEO (generative engine optimization) is the practice of making a licensed gambling brand easy for AI assistants to find, understand and cite correctly. It builds on SEO: your pages must be crawlable and indexed first. On top of that it focuses on consistent brand facts, pages that answer specific questions, and coverage on the third-party sites that AI answers rely on.

Google itself calls optimizing for its AI features "still SEO". We agree, and we price it that way. What changes is where you look for gaps.

Why gambling brands are under-cited

AI answers about gambling lean heavily on affiliates and review sites. In one test of 100 prompts across four AI models, Casino.org was cited in 61 of them, and the top three of the 146 US affiliates tracked took 37% of the 1,755 citations to them. Operator websites can be overlooked even for facts only the operator knows, such as withdrawal limits or which states it is licensed in.

There is a second cause. Google's AI features use what it calls query fan-out: one question becomes several background searches. The pages cited may not rank for the question you typed at all. Ahrefs found 76% of AI Overview citations came from top-10 results in mid-2025, and 38% in a larger 2026 sample, though the studies used different detection and are not directly comparable. Rankings still help. They no longer settle the matter.

What we change

01 · BRAND FACTS

One version of the truth

Licence numbers, regulators, launch dates, payment methods and age limits stated identically on your site, app store listings and partner pages, and marked up with Organization schema.

02 · QUOTABLE PAGES

Answers an assistant can lift

Help, rules and "is it legal" pages rewritten so the fact comes first, with a date and a source. Our sportsbook AEO work follows the same pattern.

03 · SOURCE COVERAGE

Being on the pages AI reads

We map which affiliates, regulators' registers and news sources get cited for your target prompts, and check what they say about you. Where facts are wrong, we help you request corrections.

04 · ACCESS

Letting the right bots in

Blocking OAI-SearchBot removes a site from ChatGPT search; blocking Google-Extended does not affect AI Overviews. We check your robots.txt and CDN rules against what each bot actually controls.

What we do not do is buy placements on affiliate sites, write fake comparison articles, or plant text meant to manipulate AI systems. Bing's guidelines now treat that kind of prompt manipulation as abuse, and it would sit badly with any regulator reviewing your marketing.

Controls you now have

Since 31 August 2026, Search Console lets a site opt out of AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover's AI features worldwide, without affecting normal rankings. Few licensed operators should use it, because it also removes the impressions. It is worth knowing it exists, and we can model what you would lose before anyone flips the switch. Page-level controls are reportedly due by March 2027, a deadline set by the UK competition regulator.

The term GEO comes from a 2023 academic paper, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization". In practice, the four overlap heavily, and the glossary defines the related terms.

What GEO looks like for each type of business

Online casinos. The questions that matter are about trust and availability: is this site licensed here, who runs it, how fast does it pay. GEO work centres on the licence page, payments content and correcting affiliates who describe you with outdated facts.

Sportsbooks. Rules and legality questions dominate, and the market is concentrated: 5WPR's June 2026 index scored five US operators at over 92% of its weighted AI citation share. Challengers gain most from answer-first rules and state pages that assistants can cite.

Affiliates. Large affiliates are heavily cited in gambling AI answers. The work is about staying cited: original testing, stated methods and current facts. See casino affiliate SEO.

A first 90 days

Days 1 to 30: check crawler access, build the brand fact inventory, run a baseline prompt panel and map the sources cited. Days 31 to 60: publish or fix the licence, payments and market pages, and send correction requests to the most-cited third-party pages with wrong facts. Days 61 to 90: re-run the panel, compare citation and accuracy rates with the baseline, and choose the next pages from the questions where you are still absent.

Mistakes to avoid

Paying for mentions on review sites, which carries the same risk as paid links. Hiding instructions for AI systems in page text, which Bing's guidelines treat as abuse. Reporting a single screenshot as proof. Rewriting every page for "AI" while the site still has crawl problems. And treating GEO as separate from SEO, when most of the gains come from the same foundations.

HOW WE MEASURE IT

GEO reporting you can audit

AI answers change with wording, location and time, so a single screenshot proves nothing. Each month we run a fixed prompt panel (20, 60 or 120 prompts depending on your pricing plan) across the assistants your market uses, and record four things for each answer: whether the brand is mentioned, whether it is linked, whether the facts are correct, and which competitors appear. We add Search Console's AI impressions data where your site qualifies for it. The LLM brand visibility service is this monitoring on its own, for teams that want the data before committing to changes.

QUESTIONS

iGaming GEO questions

Is GEO just SEO with a new name?

Largely, yes, and anyone who tells you otherwise should show their evidence. The technical foundations and content quality are the same. GEO adds attention to brand facts, third-party sources and how answers are phrased, and it needs a different kind of measurement.

Does an llms.txt file help?

No major AI search engine has confirmed it reads llms.txt, and Google has said it is not needed. It is harmless to have one, but we would not spend budget on it. Our review of which AI optimization tactics have evidence covers this and other claims.

Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend us?

No, and nobody can. In repeated tests, ChatGPT and Google's AI returned the same brand list less than 1% of the time. We can improve the odds that you are found and described correctly, and show you the trend honestly.

Which AI platforms recommend online casinos?

ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot can all answer gambling questions, and their behaviour varies by market and over time. Google has published no gambling-specific rules for its AI features. We monitor the platforms your market actually uses.

Does AI search need a separate strategy?

It needs separate measurement and some extra work on brand facts and third-party sources, but not a separate foundation. A site that is crawlable, clear and accurate is already most of the way there.

Will AI search replace our organic traffic?

Some informational clicks are already being absorbed by AI answers. Branded and transactional searches still send traffic, and AI answers link to sources. The safest position is to be the cited source for facts about your own brand.
