International iGaming SEO for multi-market brands
A licence in New Jersey, another in Ontario and a UK brand on the side is three search problems, not one. We plan the structure, the launch sequence and the local content so each market gets found by the right people and nobody else.
Plan a market launch ↗International iGaming SEO is search planning for a gambling brand that operates under more than one licence. It decides how markets are separated (domains, subdomains or folders), which pages each market needs, how search engines are told which version to show, and how content reflects the rules of each regulator rather than a translated copy of one site.
For gambling, the market boundary is a legal line as well as a language one. That changes almost every structural decision.
The limit most plans miss: hreflang stops at the border
Google's hreflang annotations accept a language plus a country code, such as en-US or en-CA. They cannot target a US state or a Canadian province. So hreflang can separate your UK site from your US site, but it cannot tell Google that one page is for Pennsylvania and another is for Michigan.
That has practical consequences. State and province versions need genuinely different content to be indexed separately, or they need to be consolidated. And since Googlebot crawls mostly from the US, a site that serves different content by visitor location may never show Google its non-US versions. Separate URLs for each market, reachable by any crawler, are the reliable option.
Choosing a structure
| Setup | When it fits | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Country-code domain (for example .co.uk, .ca) | A market with its own licence, brand terms or legal entity, such as a UK or Ontario operation | Each domain builds authority on its own; brand and entity facts must still match across them |
| Subdomain per market | Regulated markets that must be technically ring-fenced, which is common in Ontario | Search Console property per subdomain; internal links between markets need care |
| Subfolder per state or province on one domain | US states under one brand, where shared authority helps and differences are real | Thin state pages get ignored; add the facts that genuinely differ |
| One page, location-adaptive | Rarely the right answer for search | Google warns against serving content by IP; crawlers may see only one version |
What actually differs between markets
Translation is the smallest part. The differences that matter for search are the ones a regulator or a local player would notice.
- Which products are legal: online casino is live in seven US states, while online sports betting is legal in 31 states plus Washington, DC, according to Track360 (July 2026). Maine has legalised online casino but it was not live as of October 2026.
- Age and safer-gambling messages: 21+ in most US states, 19+ in Ontario, 18+ in the UK and Alberta, each with its own help line and wording.
- What promotions may say: Ontario bans public bonus advertising, the UK has capped wagering requirements at 10x since January 2026, and Italy bans almost all gambling advertising.
- Payments and withdrawal methods, which drive a large share of help searches.
Our article on localization goes through these market by market, and our Ontario iGaming SEO guide covers the strictest North American market in detail.
Launching in a new state or province
Alberta's regulated market opened on 13 July 2026 with around 50 licensed operators. In a launch like that, fifty brands compete for the same "is it legal in Alberta" searches at once. A brand whose market hub is already indexed and accurate before go-live gives Google and AI assistants something to cite from the first day. Our US state launch playbook sets out the full checklist. The plan works back from your go-live date: market hub and legality page indexed early (without any promotional claims you are not yet allowed to make), help and payments content ready at launch, and monitoring of how AI assistants describe your availability in the first weeks.
International iGaming SEO questions
Should we launch markets one at a time?
Usually yes. Each new market needs its own hub, help content and monitoring, and a staggered rollout lets you fix template problems once. The order should follow your licences and commercial priorities, not search volume alone.
Do you handle translation?
No. We brief and review localized content for search, but translation is quoted separately or done by your team. Many regulated iGaming markets are English-language anyway.
Can you help us rank in a market where we are not licensed yet?
We can prepare structure and non-promotional pages for a confirmed launch. We do not promote a brand in a market where it cannot legally operate.
Which plan covers several markets?
The Multi-Market plan covers up to four markets with an international SEO and hreflang review. Growth covers two.
